Writing the method section of the academic dissertation
The method section is a main section of an academic dissertation and discusses the tools and strategies used for gathering and analyzing data. Data gathering strategies may include observation, questionnaires, interviews, experiments and more.
The basis of a dissertation’s method section is:
- Stating the problem
- Validating the method you are about to explore
- Explaining your method
- Putting forth the results in a factual form
- Answering any questions that pertain to the above
You can use charts to clarify patterns to your reader so that they can examine your method and arrive at the desired conclusions. Data needs interpretation and cannot stand by itself.
Problem
Explain the problems you want to confront by briefly addressing the main research questions of your academic dissertation in a conversational format. This gives the reader an idea of why you are doing the research and what you hope to accomplish.
Method and style
Include an overview of your approach to direct your reader and establish your method and style. Include all aspects of your procedure such as validation, reasoning, justification, sampling problems etc. You must show your reader that you thoroughly understand the process of methodology in the context of your topic.
Explanation of the method
You will need to tell the reader why you are going about proving your statement (or solving the problem) via the method you have chosen. It’s important to spend a few paragraphs convincing the reader that your methods are the best course of action to reach the result you want.
Provide valid reasons for your selected methods that were used to carry out your research. This is especially important if you are adapting an unorthodox method of research. Assess other methods of approach in order to support your chosen method of research. Discuss the pros and cons of other methods against your own.
Answers
Try your best to anticipate hypothetical questions that would arise if your reader could talk back. This is a desirable trait in a writer which gains the reader’s trust. Address any and all questions, arguments, objections and angles that may leave the reader in the dark if you hadn’t.
The method is arguably the heart and soul of your dissertation so make sure you know how to construct it properly. Planting the right seeds into your reader’s mind during the method section of your dissertation will make him or her understand the reason and intentions of your whole paper.
